On September 30, 2006, a mother of 5, Detra Rainey, William Rainey, Hakiem Rainey, Malachi Robinson, and Samenia Robinson lost their lives at the hands of her husband in North Charleston, SC. Her only surviving son Christan Rainey was away attending College in Baton Rouge, LA. In a seven-year journey, Christan Rainey wondered what was his purpose in life after his family was stripped away from him. Finally, he was given a vision to convert his sorrow in to spreading awareness about Domestic Violence. On September 28, 2013, Christan Rainey put together an event in honor of his mother and four siblings. The event was named Detra Rainey: Stop the Violence “Save a Life” Domestic Violence Awareness. From the birth of this event, came another birth of the organization known today as Men Against Domestic Violence. (M.A.D. USA)

M.A.D. USA was founded on the idea of informing the community of the tragedy of Detra Rainey and her four children to educational awareness of Domestic Violence. Domestic Violence needed to be looked at from a different scope. In order for true change, it is imperative that men take a stance to change the culture of how women are treated by men. M.A.D. USA is founded on the principles of educating, activism, and advocacy of not only decreasing but ending South Carolina’s long streak in being the number one state in men killing women. The ultimate goal is to have Auxiliary Chapters throughout the USA to promote educational awareness, advocacy, and activism.

M.A.D. USA developed an educational curriculum for grades K-12. The sole purpose of this curriculum is to take a proactive approach to end and change the culture of normalizing domestic violence with individuals and their abusive behaviors at home or in any other arena. Adult Training has also been developed to train First Responders such as Fire, Law Enforcement, EMS, State Medical Associations, Faith Based Organization and the Military. M.A.D. was appointed to be a part of the South Carolina Governor’s Domestic Violence Task Force, with the help from other organizations throughout the State of South Carolina. In the year 2015, Domestic Violence reform was pushed through the Senate Bill 3 and after countless days of traveling and testifying before the Domestic Violence Committee, The Domestic Violence Reform Bill was signed into law by Governor Nikki Haley on March 15, 2016.
